Smokey Pecan SPG
Smokey Pecan SPG is Double S Smokers' elevated take on the classic Texas "Holy Trinity" of barbecue seasonings: Salt, Pepper, and Garlic.
While a standard SPG is the default baseline for Texas brisket and beef, the Sanchez brothers modified this blend to make it an incredibly versatile, all-purpose utility rub that bridges the gap between beef, pork, and poultry.
What Makes It Different
A traditional Texas SPG focuses purely on a coarse texture (usually 16-mesh black pepper and kosher salt) to build a heavy bark on long beef cooks. Double S Smokers shifted the profile by introducing a distinct, warm wood-smoke element:
The Pecan Profile: It infuses a distinct, sweet, and slightly nutty aroma that mimics cooking over real pecan wood. Because pecan smoke is much milder and sweeter than aggressive woods like mesquite or hickory, it doesn't overpower the meat.
The Base: It retains the savory, sharp backbone of coarse salt and pungent garlic, backed by a clean pepper punch.
The Sweetness Factor: Unlike their Piggy Boom or Chick-A-Boom (which lean into sweeter competition profiles), the sugar profile here is kept low to ensure it doesn't scorch or turn bitter over high-heat grilling.
Best Applications
Because it features that milder pecan undertone, it’s a massive hit for backyard cooks who want Texas flavor without relying solely on heavy beef rubs:
Pork & Poultry Base: It is spectacular on pork chops, chicken thighs, and turkey breasts where traditional heavy beef rubs are too intense, but where you still want a savory garlic-and-pepper crust.
Steaks & Burgers: The pecan notes create a fantastic, wood-fired flavor profile when searing ribeyes or building a crust on smash burgers over direct flame.
The Competition Layer: Many competition cooks use this as a savory "base coat" on ribs or brisket, letting it sit on the meat for a few minutes to draw out moisture before layering one of the sweeter "Boom" rubs on top.
